No. 16 x 2012

Long-time friend of the Academy, the Amen Brother Disco Band, has finally entered the realm of black plastic paradise with a 12" of some heavy edits on AMBRO 001.
And thus, a new label is born at the hands of Dubliner-in-exile Niall Kirk. The palette here is full of dusty, greasy stompers rolling along the desert plains with a mean & funky attitude. "Underground psychedelic soul" as Piccadilly Records puts it. I would say that this is a big step to re-organize (or wreak havoc if you will) on any record collection that separates disco from afro & psychedelic rock. They just wouldn't know where to put this one.

TWENTY FOUR AND COUNTING

Since today is my birthday I thought it would be nice to have my own orchestra compose a theme song of all my favourite things:
heavy basslines & classic disco guitars, some whacked out strings, a heavy rock section,
the latino-style percussion break (with a deep toned male voice saying random words of approval)and some sprinkles of synthesizer magic to top it off.
All way below the 100bpm mark and dragged out for about 6 minutes, and there you have it.

MOVING BACKWARDS INTO A GROOVE

A ripe pick from the dusty bins of my favoutite record store. German prog rockers Triumvirat manages to conjure fantasies of a fantasticly cheap Saturday Night Fever-ripoff of possibly Italian origin. Maybe even a bit late to jump the bandwagon as to include some breakdancing-scenes by someones lame uncle.
I'm sure I would have loved this movie if it had ever existed, but I'm quite content with only the soundtrack score and its funky streetsmart hooks and wet sloppy bass.

DIRTY MINDS

FFA (Fist Fuckers Association) must be the nastiest piece of punk-funk disco-rock ever recorded within the borders of this country. The Swedish band Lädernunnan changed their name to The Leather Nun in order to appeal to an international audience and win the hearts of fun-loving sodomites.
FFA from 1983 was co-written by the legendary Freddie Wadling, and sung with complete nonchalance of the english language by Jonas Almqvist.
You may have heard it featured last year as the opening song in the amazingly sleezy guest mix on Beats In Space by our local heroes Jackpot.

THE SCANDINAVIAN STUFF

According to the legend, Jackpot was a project in the early 1980's by Swedish producer Gleen Asp and the Italian sound artist Marco Donnatello, who drifted into oblivion due to drug-related problems and only released two singles of their pioneering mix of new beat, italo disco and sound art. 

The other story is that Jackpot consists of Erik Wikström & Luciano Leiva (formerly of the electro group Puppetmasters and also part of DJ/producer team Meat Boys with Andreas Kleerup)

As always, the Disco Academy prefers the former version, since that is what disco is all about: reinventing music history to suite your own needs. And right now, nobody does this better than Jackpot. 

The track Coda from 1972 by the polish rockband Czerwone Gitary (which means The Red Guitars) was released on the record Prog Is Not A Four Letter Word in 2005, compiled by Andy Votel. 

This re-edit/remix by Jackpot was posted a while back by Stockholm-based blog and club imperium 24:Hours, and starts off with an excerpt from an interview with Gleen Asp, reminicing about the hard working days of tuning guitars and producing disco while moping over the talentless kids of today with their computers.

The Long Run is one of the greatest albums ever, and of course a classic at the Disco Academy.

You may have picked up on this track, as I did, as featured in an excellent mix by Västkustska Ryggdunkarsällskapet a couple of years ago. Either way, if you're a a disco freak addicted to blogs (which I'm hoping you are) you've surely come across King Of Hollywood, another great track from this album.

I thought I would take a break from my usual disguise as the moustache-clad, poncho-wrapped hitchhiker of the cosmic highways, and serve up some re-edits with all cards on the table.

So, this is basically an extended version of the albums meager 2:46 in length. With an extended intro and outro to squeeze all the Californian sand out of this balearic chugger, bringing the playing time to 4:13.
